In a landmark transition, HAF Uganda officially assumed management of the Maratatu Vocational Skills Training Centre (MVSTC) in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in January 2026. This center represents our strategic commitment to youth employment and economic resilience, directly aligning with the Mastercard Foundation’s goals. MVSTC is designed to bridge the gap between learning and livelihoods for refugee and host community youth.
Current Trades: Hair Dressing, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Motorcycle Mechanics, with phased expansion into Carpentry and Tailoring.
Learner Reach: An inaugural call for applications (Feb-March 2026) received 35 qualified applicants, with training scheduled to commence in April 2026.
Holistic Model: Beyond technical skills, MVSTC integrates MHPSS services, safeguarding training for all instructors, and plans for a robust graduate follow-up mechanism.
Sustainability Strategy: HAF Uganda is developing the center’s 16-acre land parcel for income-generating agriculture to ensure long term financial sustainability, a model recommended by UNHCR and OPM.
Stakeholder Support: The center operates with strong backing from the Office of the Prime Minister, UNHCR, and local Refugee Welfare Councils.
