In response to the rising cases of violence linked to the COVID-19 lockdown, Humanity for All Foundation Uganda (HAF-Uganda) has taken a significant step by launching Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) helplines in the Acholi sub-region. The prolonged lockdown period not only disrupted livelihoods but also intensified stress, anxiety, and social tensions within households and communities, leading to an increase in cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The introduction of these helplines is aimed at providing immediate, accessible, and confidential support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges or violence. Through trained counselors and support staff, the helplines offer psychological first aid, counseling services, referrals, and guidance to survivors of violence and those in distress. This initiative ensures that even in times of restricted movement, vulnerable individuals can access the help they urgently need.
HAF-Uganda recognizes that mental health is a critical component of overall well-being and community stability. By addressing the psychological effects of the pandemic alongside SGBV concerns, the organization seeks to restore hope, promote healing, and strengthen resilience among affected populations. The helplines also serve as an important platform for awareness creation, encouraging communities to speak out against violence and seek support without fear of stigma.

Through collaboration with local leaders, health workers, and community structures, HAF-Uganda aims to ensure that information about the helplines reaches as many people as possible. This initiative marks a crucial step toward mitigating the hidden impacts of COVID-19 and fostering safer, healthier communities in Acholi.
